Canister Stoves

Canister stoves are probably the easiest stove to use in the back country. They are also one of the most compact options out there. Their single piece design with its minimal parts, makes operation and upkeep a snap. There are several different styles of canister stoves, some inverting the canister, some enclosing it, and most just simply screwing down onto the top of the can.

Here are some canister stoves I’ve used and liked (or not):

MSR Pocket Rocket 2 – $44.95

Weight: 2.6 oz. (73 g)
Dimensions: 7.25 x 4 x 5 inches
Boil time (1 Liter): 3.5 mins
Burn time (8 oz Canister): ≈60 minutes
Fuel Type: Canister

I used the orginial MSR Pocket Rocket stove on my 2012 Mountains to Sea Trail thru hike. The original Pocket Rocket weighs 3.06 ounces, is slightly larger than the PR2, and does not come with a spark igniter.

MSR doesn’t list the BTU’s for the Pocket Rockets, but I went through roughly one canister of fuel per week using the PR1, bringing 20 ounces of water to a boil twice a day.

I have zero complaints about the PR1 and still bring it along when I need to cook for more people than just myself. I have never cleaned it or had to perform any type of maintenance on it, and it works just as well as it did the first time I used it.

Jetboil MightyMo Stove – $49.95

Weight: 3.35 oz (95g)
Dimensions: (Folded) 3 x 2 inches / (Deployed) 6.5 x 4.1 inches
Boil time (1 Liter): 3.25 mins
Fuel Type: Canister
BTU’s: 10,000

Just a little bit heavier than the MSR Pocket Rocket, and barley more compact. The biggest difference between MSR’s canister stove and Jetboil’s is that the MightyMo packs a whopping 10,000 BTU’s! This means faster boil times and more consistent cooking when simmering and preparing food that requires more than just reconstitution in hot water.

Jetboil MicroMo – $129.95

Weight (includes pot): 12 oz (340g)
Dimensions: 5 x 6 x 9 inches
Boil time (0.5 Liter): 2.25 mins
Fuel Type: Canister
BTU’s: 6,000

Even though it technically has less BTU’s, the MicroMo’s design allows for more wind resistance and control over simmering temps. Jetboil systems use their patented “FluxRing” to increase the surface area of conductive metal on the bottom of the pot, decreasing boil times and conserving fuel.

The heavier 12 ounce weight includes the custom Jetboil system pot, which seamlessly attaches to the stove, creating an all-in-one, super fuel-efficient, nesting cook system. The pot is insulated too, so food stays warm longer.

Jetboil Joule Cooking System – $199.95

Weight (includes pot): 28 oz (790 g)
Dimensions: 8 x 9 x 9 inches
Boil time (1 Liter): 2 mins 40 secs
Fuel Type: Canister
BTU’s: 10,000

The Jetboil Joule boasts a crazy fast boil time, but is heavier and bulkier than other options. The Joule still employs the Jetboil system, providing awesome wind resistance and heat retention due to the integration of stove and pot as one piece. Great for groups needing large volumes of liquid or meals heated quickly.

MSR WhisperLite “Universal” MULTI-MULTI -FUEL Stove – $139.95

Weight: 14.9 oz (423 g)
Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 6 inches
Boil time (white gas), 1 liter: 3.5 minutes
Burn time (white gas) per 20oz / 600ml of fuel: 155 minutes
Fuel Type: White Gas / Unleaded Auto Gas / Kerosene / Isobutane Canisters
Includes: Fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small-parts kit, instructions, and stuff sack.

The same as the MSR WhisperLite International Stove, but with an attachment to be able to use canister fuel as well! The kit comes with every accessory and burns with almost every type of fuel, making it one of the most versatile stoves out there.

The Whisperlite Universal uses Hybrid-Fuel Performance: Patent pending AirControl™ technology creates the optimal fuel/air mix for top-notch performance with canister fuel, white gas, kerosene and unleaded gasoline. Even with all of the equipment, it is relatively lightweight; using an aluminum mixer tube, extra-stable stainless steel legs and refined design keep weight to a minimum.

By inverting the fuel canister, the butane behaves more like a liquid fuel, delivering better cold weather and low-fuel performance with a more consistent output over the life of each canister. The nifty canister stand is included.

Self-cleaning Shaker Jet technology and redesigned leg assembly facilitate fast cleaning and even easier maintenance in the field.

If you are traveling any where in the universe, this is a great option.
